Approximately 530 sq km in size, Phuket is about he same size as Singapore. Road access from the mainland is from the north where the Sarasin Bridge connects Phuket with the rest of Thailand. Phuket international airport is also found towards the north of the island and the main port is found in Phuket City on the east coast. Most of the quality beaches can be found along the west coast, with beaches stretching almost the entire length of the coast on the west. This is also where the main tourist centres of Patong, Kata and Karon can be found. On the other side of the island, much of the east coast is made from mangrove swamp which makes for more physical activities as opposed to lazing on the beach.

With a modern road network the island is easy to navigate and many people choose to rent private vehicles during their stay. Maps of the island are readily available and highlight places of interest to visitors.
